Q: Where do you get your ideas?
I get my ideas from lots of different places. One idea isn't usually enough to build a book around, but that first "starter" idea gets things moving. The starter idea for Notes From a Liar and Her Dog woke me up in the middle of the night. I don't honestly know where it came from. The starter idea for Al Capone Does My Shirts came from a newspaper article. The first idea for A Tree Falls at Lunch Period came from a story a friend told me. The idea for Louder, Lili came from a conversation between my son and daughter. The idea for Putting the Monkeys to Bed started with my experience trying to get my son to go to sleep. The idea for How to Make Friends with a Giant came, in part, from the fact that I was the shortest kid in my elementary school class. In third grade, my teacher, Mrs. Davies, insisted we line up in "line order" which meant according to height. I was always first.
